New Build
Alongside Crawford Architects, WBRC Inc. and PC Construction Company, the goal of the Shawn Walsh Center addition/renovation and Alfond Arena addition was to create a unified architectural and brand identity for Maine Hockey. The university has an immense sense of pride in their hockey programs and wanted their facilities “to scream Maine hockey”. The collaboration is a true example of the value of teamwork.
When entering the Shawn Walsh Center you’re met with a large, illuminated state of Maine map which represents the universities ties to being the only Division 1 program in the state. “We are Maine’s team”. Storytelling and branding are integrated throughout the rest of the facility, including the film room, premium lounge, locker rooms and hype tunnel. “If you’re only in one space of the facility, you should know Maine
is a premier program.”
The historic Alfond Arena is arguably the greatest collegiate hockey venue and home to an intensely passionate fan base. At the center of the design team’s goals was to create a space for the fans, which includes a designated space for their Maine Hockey Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame showcases their national championship trophies, artifacts and memorabilia, and most important program contributors. The people, stories, and program success extend out to the East concourse, so fans and guests feel surrounded and connected to the program. “We want the history of the program to be felt but it needs to be current and modern”
